MIB issues advisory to media channels

Amid escalating tension between India and Pakistan, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) issued an advisory to all media channels, calling for the need for responsible reporting in the interest of national security. The exhortation, which was issued on 26 April in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 Indians, also urged them to refrain from broadcasting live coverage of defence operations and the movement of security forces.

"In the interest of national security, all media platforms, news agencies, and social media users are advised to exercise utmost responsibility and adhere strictly to existing laws and regulations while reporting on matters concerning defence and other security-related operations," the ministry stated.

The advisory specifically prohibited real-time coverage, dissemination of visuals, or reports based on 'sources-based' information related to defence operations. It warns that premature disclosure of sensitive details may 'inadvertently assist hostile elements and endanger operational effectiveness and the safety of personnel.'

This holds particular significance in recent days, as increasingly concerns are being raised about the quality and accuracy of media coverage surrounding the ongoing conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations. In the wake of  'Operation Sindoor', mainstream Indian TV news channels have come under widespread criticism for instances of amplified sensationalism and the dissemination of unverified or misleading information, underscoring the need for media to uphold accuracy and balance, especially during sensitive national and geopolitical events.

The advisory from the ministry further added, “Media, digital platforms, and individuals play a vital role in safeguarding national security. Apart from the legal obligations, it is a shared moral responsibility to ensure that our collective actions do not compromise ongoing operations or the security of our forces.”

These developments highlight the importance of responsible journalism and measured, factual reporting, particularly in times of heightened national and geopolitical sensitivity, such as the present situation.
