JioStar to exit media rights deal with ICC two years before deal runs out: Reports

The media company had acquired the 2024-2027 cycle for USD 3 billion.

The first tournament that could be impacted is the upcoming Men's T20 World Cup 2026

JioStar has reportedly pulled out of its current broadcasting deal with the International Cricket Council (ICC). The current broadcasting cycle kicked off in 2024 and was till the end of 2027. JioStar had bagged the rights for USD 3 billion.

As per a report in The Economic Times, JioStar has informed the ICC that it won't be able to complete the remainder of the four-year deal due to deep financial losses. The report adds that ICC has begun a fresh sale for the Indian rights and has approached the likes of Sony Sports Network, Netflix and Prime Video.

This move comes two months before the ICC Men's T20 World Cup which is being hosted in India and Sri Lanka and is scheduled to start on 7 February.

Disney Star had acquired the rights for this cycle in 2022, before the merger with Viacom18. Sanjog Gupta, who is now CEO, ICC, was part of the Disney Star team that bagged the rights as CEO - Sports.
