Instagram has launched a desktop version of its Edits video editing app for macOS, allowing creators to work on more complex video projects beyond their mobile devices.
The desktop version offers a larger workspace and more precise editing controls, making it easier to manage multiple clips, adjust cuts and refine videos. Creators can also customise their editing experience with their own fonts, visual styles and keyboard shortcuts.
According to Brett Westervelt, who leads the Edits app, more than 50 million people have used the platform since its launch just over a year ago. Instagram said it plans to release weekly updates to the desktop app based on creator feedback.
The editor includes access to Instagram's licensed and royalty-free music libraries, sound and video effects, and automatic captions in multiple languages. Creators can also access audio and text styles saved on the mobile app.
A key feature is the ability to publish videos directly to Instagram from the desktop editor, including adding tags, locations and trial reels. The app also supports horizontal and vertical video formats, along with 4K watermark-free exports for sharing across other platforms.
Filmmaker and creator Alex Cissé, who tested the desktop version, said the larger screen and more precise controls retain features of the mobile app, including Instagram's music library, profile syncing and direct publishing.
Instagram said it is also working on allowing creators to move between desktop and mobile while editing the same project.
