Flipkart and Netflix have rolled out a new campaign to announce their partnership, turning a familiar feature of Indian neighbourhoods, the window, into an unconventional entertainment screen.
Conceptualised by Talented, the campaign, titled ‘Entertainment Ka Pardah’, (The screen of entertainment) builds on the insight that closely packed homes often give neighbours an unsolicited view into each other’s lives. Instead of simply playing along with the idea of window-watching, the brands use it to introduce an alternative source of entertainment: Netflix.
The campaign aims to communicate Flipkart’s proposition that customers can unlock the OTT streamer’s membership through their Flipkart orders.
The accompanying film, directed by Chalees Chor and produced by SUPRVLLN Films, dramatises the familiar neighbourhood behaviour of treating a neighbour’s window almost like a television screen. The film opens with an arranged marriage setup, showcasing the familiar ritual the prospective groom and bride, along with their respective families, go through before finalising a proposal. Even as the respective family members and the couple seem to be in agreement over the match, another voice suddenly booms in, voicing disapproval. Soon, other voices join in, revealing that they are coming from the opposite house, where the household has gathered to watch the proceedings at their neighbours’ home.
What we think about it: The campaign effectively draws from an everyday neighbourhood behaviour and uses it to bring the Netflix partnership to life through a sharp, culturally familiar insight. The humour works because the behaviour is recognisable and relatable.
Pratik Shetty, head of growth and marketing, Flipkart, said, “Entertainment is now a basic necessity and we look for entertainment in everything. So we used this insight to bring alive our partnership with Netflix, where you get your monthly Netflix membership with Flipkart orders.”
Eesha Sharma, Malvika Thirani and Aditi Gujaran, creatives at Talented, said,. “Even the design of the pardah was born from the partnership, Inspired by Netflix’s iconic red streams, the curtains come in Netflix red and Flipkart blue. They will now be going live across buildings in Indian cities, so stay tuned.”
Godwin D’mello from Chalees Chor, film director, said, “The vision was doubling down on the awkwardness of being watched, but with deadpan humour, as if window-watching is the most normal thing to do. Once we treated the window like a television screen, the jokes started flowing naturally.”
As part of the activation, curtains will be placed in residential buildings across cities, offering a visual cue to the partnership. The curtains, designed in Netflix red and Flipkart blue, are inspired by Netflix’s visual identity and the two brands’ association.
