SPI campaign for Spider-Man: Brand New Day ft. KL Rahul

As 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' gears up for its theatrical release on 30 July, Sony Pictures India (SPI) has teamed up with Indian cricketer KL Rahul for a campaign that playfully introduces the film's central premise while bringing together two worlds with mass appeal - cricket and superheroes.

The ad film opens at what appears to be a routine press conference featuring Rahul. But things quickly take an unexpected turn. Journalists fail to recognise him, dismissing his attempts to identify himself, while security is eventually called in to escort him out. Just when the situation reaches its most absurd, everyone's friendly neighbourhood superhero swings in to Rahul's rescue.

Its then revealed that Rahul's bizarre predicament mirrors the core storyline of the upcoming film 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' where Peter Parker finds himself navigating a world that no longer recognises or remembers him. The campaign cleverly uses Rahul's public persona to dramatise the unsettling idea of losing one's identity and legacy overnight, while teasing audiences about the emotional arc of the upcoming film. By pairing a well-recognised sporting personality with one of pop culture's most iconic superheroes, the campaign attempts to build anticipation for the film beyond conventional movie marketing.

What we think about it: The campaign succeeds in drawing attention to the film's central conflict through an accessible and humorous setup. Using a familiar sporting face helps bridge the narrative with Indian audiences while creating intrigue around the movie. That said, the execution lacks the dramatic build-up or emotional payoff that could have made the film more memorable. Even so, it does manage to pique curiosity about the movie and offers fans an entertaining glimpse into the superhero's next chapter.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland, releases in India on 30 July in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
