Qatar Airways has rolled out a campaign to showcase how it offers 'free Wi-Fi that's faster than most home Wi-Fis' with Starlink since late 2024.
More than half its long-haul fleet now will offer fast, uninterrupted internet, with the 777 rollout complete and the A350 installs in their final stretch.
To highlight this, it partnered with Google to turn the aircraft into a mid-air studio to stress-test Starlink’s high-speed connection and Google’s Gemini tools. The creators were challenged to create two full ads conceptualised, written, produced, and finished in a single A350 flight. The airline teased the project with the Sky Studio Challenge, building anticipation ahead of the launch and how they aim to bring in two directors to do this.
Both ads dropped on 18 November.
Directed by Torey Kohara, the first film, 'Above the Clouds', opens with a dragon drifting past the window as two passengers sit aboard a Qatar Airways flight. One of them connects to the Wi-Fi, and the story shifts into a quick run-through of what the connection can handle: taking work calls, downloading presentations, streaming favourite shows, scrolling through Reels, even making a call back home. It’s a simple, playful way to show the range of what passengers can actually do mid-air.
Directed by PJ Acceturo, the second film, 'Bring Them With You', uses a set of fictional characters onboard a Qatar Airways flight to drive home the point: you can stream and watch content from cruising altitude without a single hiccup, and the Wi-Fi service is free for everyone on board.
The airline isn’t done talking about its new connectivity push. Qatar Airways has now opened a public vote on the two ads, with the winning creator set to be announced on 23 November.
What we think about it: It’s a sharp collaboration, and the AI-made ads delivered are clean, inventive, and a solid proof of what this kind of tech partnership can actually pull off. They also built curiosity and momentum ahead of the release, which worked as a smart PR move.
