OpenAI has announced that it is introducing a 'shopping research' feature on ChatGPT.
Through this, users can find the 'right products' by describing what one is looking for. ChatGPT aims to build a 'thoughtful guide' to help the user decide on the purchase as it researches deeply across the internet, reviews sources, and builds on the understanding of the user from past conversations.
Shopping research is available for mobile and logged-in ChatGPT users across free and paid plans.
According to a note shared by ChatGPT, it performs better across detail-heavy categories like electronics, beauty, home and garden, kitchen and appliances, and sports and outdoor.
Shopping research is powered by a version of GPT-5 mini trained with reinforcement learning specifically for shopping tasks.
The note for the announcement added that while the 'model powering shopping research performs better relative to our other models on internal evaluations that measure its ability to accurately cite product details from the web, it is still not perfect'. It warned that shopping research might make mistakes about product details like price and availability.
